Course Description
This intensive course is ideal for learners who have completed my beginner course or who have a basic understanding of Cantonese pronunciation and vocabulary. The course focuses on social topics and life in Hong Kong, such as dining, making reservations, and shopping. Part I Introduction to the course Review of basic Cantonese pronunciation and vocabulary Introduction to the Yale Romanization Scheme Oral drills and listening comprehension exercises Part II Social topics: dining Making reservations Ordering food Paying for meals Expressing your likes and dislikes Part III Social topics: shopping Asking for directions Finding items in a store Negotiating prices Returning items Part IV Social topics: living in Hong Kong Finding a place to live Getting around Dealing with bureaucracy Making friends Part V More practical sentence patterns and a wider range of useful words and expressions related to various aspects of life Oral drills and listening comprehension exercises Part VI Writing short messages or speeches in Yale (around 200 words) using correct Cantonese grammar and sentence structures to discuss specific topics Writing down or reading out any Cantonese sounds in Yale to continue learning Cantonese by yourself with online dictionaries. In addition to the regular class sessions, you will also be expected to complete a variety of homework assignments, such as listening comprehension exercises, reading comprehension exercises, and writing exercises. You will also be encouraged to practice speaking Cantonese outside of class, with friends, family, or online. By the end of the course, you will be able to: 1. Improve their pronunciation and confidently communicate in different social activities. 2. Demonstrate mastery of 400+ frequently used Cantonese words or short phrases, and about 100 sentence patterns/structures in addition to what they've previously learned. 3. Write short messages or speeches in Yale (around 200 words) using correct Cantonese grammar and sentence structures to discuss specific topics. 4. Write down or read out any Cantonese sounds in Yale to continue learning Cantonese by themselves with online dictionaries.
