Course Description

This intensive course is designed for complete beginners in Cantonese. You will learn present-day Cantonese with a focus on correct pronunciation using the Yale Romanization scheme. Course content includes basic daily conversations, tone exercises, and pronunciation practice to enable you to communicate effectively in real-life situations. The highly interactive class will develop your fundamental oral communication skills. Here are the topics we will be covering: Part I Introduction to Cantonese Pronunciation of Cantonese vowels and consonants Tones in Cantonese Greetings and introductions Basic daily conversations Part II Numbers and counting Time and date Asking for and giving directions Shopping Eating out Part III Introducing yourself and others Talking about your family and friends Talking about your job and hobbies Talking about your interests and plans for the future Part IV Expressing your likes and dislikes Making requests and giving suggestions Agreeing and disagreeing Apologizing and thanking Week 5 Part V Talking about the weather Talking about the news Talking about current events Talking about travel Part VI Giving and receiving compliments Expressing your feelings Dealing with difficult situations Overcoming challenges Duration: 72-84 hours (no prior knowledge of traditional Chinese characters required) In addition to the regular class sessions, you will also be expected to complete a variety of homework assignments, such as listening comprehension exercises, reading comprehension exercises, and writing exercises. You will also be encouraged to practice speaking Cantonese outside of class, with friends, family, or online. By the end of the course, you will be able to: 1. Speak in full sentences and describe situations with confidence. 2. Master 400+ frequently used Cantonese words and 100+ sentence patterns/structures. 3. Write any Cantonese sounds in Yale Romanization for dictionary lookup. 4. Read any Cantonese sounds written in Yale Romanization correctly for continued self-learning.
