Course Description
This advanced course is ideal for learners who have completed my first two courses or who can handle confident daily conversations in Cantonese. It is designed to equip you with a range of advanced communicative skills for semi-formal to formal language scenarios. Topics for discussion include social issues in Hong Kong, environmental issues, Chinese customs and religion, and more. Suggested Learning Hours: 90 - 100 Hours Part I Introduction to the course Review of intermediate Cantonese pronunciation and vocabulary Introduction to formal and semi-formal Cantonese Oral drills and listening comprehension exercises Part II Social issues in Hong Kong Discussing current events and social issues Expressing your opinions and views Analyzing and evaluating information Part III Environmental issues Talking about the environment Discussing environmental problems and solutions Raising awareness about environmental issues Part IV Chinese customs and religion Learning about Chinese culture Discussing Chinese customs and traditions Understanding Chinese religions Part V More advanced Cantonese grammar and sentence structures Learning about more complex Cantonese grammar and sentence structures Practicing using these structures in conversation Improving your overall Cantonese fluency Part VI Writing short messages or speeches in the Yale Romanization scheme (around 200 words) using correct Cantonese grammar and sentence structures to discuss certain topics Practicing writing short messages or speeches in the Yale Romanization scheme Improving your Cantonese writing skills In addition to the regular class sessions, you will also be expected to complete a variety of homework assignments, such as listening comprehension exercises, reading comprehension exercises, and writing exercises. You will also be encouraged to practice speaking Cantonese outside of class, with friends, family, or online. By the end of the course, you will be able to: 1. Present ideas at the discourse level and give short presentations, speeches, and discussions on cultural issues 2. Present ideas at the extended discourse level and give formal speeches, presentations, and discussions in formal settings 3. Acquire a wide range of expressions based on approximately 600 additional vocabulary items, related patterns, and expressions 4. Communicate in writing short messages or speeches in the Yale Romanization scheme (around 200 words)
